He has led four research projects and five PhD theses, has been a speaker in more than 150 theoretical-practical courses and has carried out research stays at the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of Buenos Aires (Argentina), the Royal Veterinary College, London (UK), Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of the University of Sydney (Australia), the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of Corrientes (Argentina) and the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Sciences of Río Cuarto (Argentina).
Main area of interest is anaesthesia and analgesia in dogs and cats and his is research is focused on the epidemiology of mortality and anaesthetic complications and the study of the information provided by instrumental monitoring in small animals and locoregional anaesthesia.
Doctor José Diogo dos Santos
Masters in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro in 2014. Since the beginning of his career, he has dedicated himself to anaesthesia and analgesia. In addition to a postgraduate degree in anaesthesia from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and various courses in loco-regional anaesthesia and mechanical ventilation, he has done several internships in leading hospitals in Spain and England. He is currently in charge of the anaesthesia and analgesia service at the VetOeiras hospital, a visiting assistant professor at the Lusófona University of Humanity and Technologies in Lisbon and a consultant in the field of veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia. He is currently studying for a PhD in loco-regional anaesthesia at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro.
Doctor George Stilwell
George took his degree in veterinary medicine by the Lisbon University in 1986. He worked as a practitioner with farm, wild and companion animals from 1986 to 2000. In 2009 he finished his PhD on “Evaluation and control of pain caused by routine intervention in cattle” at the Lisbon University with supervision by Prof. Donald Broom from the Cambridge University.
George is a Diplomate by the European College Bovine Health Management since 2003 and a Specialist recognized by the EBVS. He is also a founder member of the Portuguese Buiatric Association. He is also a member of the Welfare Quality Network.
George currently lectures ‘Farm Animal Clinic’ and also ‘Deontology and Bioethics’ at the Lisbon University, is the director of the FMV farm animal hospital and heads the “Animal Behaviour and Welfare Research Lab” (CIISA-FMV). He was also Locum senior vet and lecturer at Massey University (2018-2019).
George was the national coordinator of the EU funded project AWIN-Animal Welfare Indicators and project WELFARUMINANT and member of the project BovINE (Beef Innovation Network Europe) and EVIEDVET. He was a hearing-expert on several EFSA working groups on calf, beef and dairy cow health and welfare. Doctor Rui Galinho Patrício
Graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Lisbon in 1997. Master’s degree from ULHT in 2014 with the thesis “Seroprevalence of Encephalitozoon cuniculi in asymptomatic rabbits in the Lisbon region”.
Rui Patrício has been working in the clinic and surgery of exotic and zoo animals since 1997. He has done several internships in clinics and zoos in Europe and the USA and is a regular presence at congresses in this field, both as a participant and as a speaker.
He is a veterinary surgeon at Allpets-Clinica Veterinária de Tires, where he was Clinical Director from 2015-2022. Provides reference consultations at various clinics and hospitals in the Lisbon region.
Visiting assistant professor at ULHT’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine since 2007 and at IPLUSO’s nursing course since 2021. Collaborator at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Lisbon, in the discipline of New Companion Animal Clinics since 2005.

Doctor Francisco Perez, VETMI
Francisco Julián Pérez Duarte, DVM, PhD, Secretary of the AVEPA Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery Working Group (GEAMI) and Founding Member of the Iberian Minimally Invasive Society MINIMAL. Researcher at the laparoscopy unit of the Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre (CCMIJU) from 2005 to November 2015. He completed his doctoral thesis in the field of laparoscopic surgery, obtaining a grade of outstanding “cum laude”. Author of multiple scientific papers in national and international journals with impact index, as well as book chapters and monographs in veterinary surgery. He has taught more than 150 minimally invasive surgery courses focused on veterinary and human surgery, presenting more than 70 papers at national and international congresses. In 2012 he co-founded the Veterinary Surgery Mobile Service “Vetmi”, where he currently develops his professional activity. Doctor Marta Valero Gonzalez

Doctor Miguel Ramos
Degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2005 from the University of Évora.
Master’s degree in Endoscopy and Minimal Invasion Surgery in Small Animals in 2021, at the University of Extremadura and the Jesús Usón Minimal Invasion Surgery Centre (CCMIJU). His professional career has been dedicated to the areas of soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery.
Miguel Ramos has done internships at the “Anjos de Assis Veterinary Medicine Centre” in Barreiro, the “Indautxu Veterinary Clinical Centre” in Bilbao, the “Small Animal Hospital” at the University of Glasgow and the “Hospital Veterinari Canis Mallorca” in Palma.
Amongst various practical training courses in Portugal and abroad, he completed an AOVet Fellowship at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Tufts University, in Massachusetts.
He worked in soft tissue surgery and orthopaedics at the Restelo Veterinary Hospital from 2007 to May 2021. He has been in charge of the orthopaedic service at the Hospital Veterinário do Atlântico since 2015.
In June 2021 he joined the surgery department of the FMV-ULisboa Veterinary School Hospital.
Doctor Luis Lamas
Luís Ressano Garcia Pardon Lamas, DVM PhD CertES(Orth) DipECVS MRCVS
He graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. After completing his final internship course at UC Davis in the University Equine Hospital, he worked for a year in the Veterinary Clinic Muralha de Évora as a large animal veterinarian. In 2003, he began an internship at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital at the University of Cambridge where, after completing his training, continued as a Resident in Equine Surgery. He obtained his Certificate in Orthopaedic Surgery from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RVCS) in 2007 and continued to work as a University Surgeon in Cambridge and at the Minster Equine Clinic in York until 2010. In 2011 he became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) by examination and therefore in equine surgery.
In 2015 he completed his PhD at the Structure and Motion Laboratory, Royal Veterinary College and the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College in the area of Biomechanics of development. Throughout his career he has published 22 articles in international scientific journals (peer-review), has presented 26 original abstracts at international congresses, is the author of six chapters in prestigious books on equine medicine and surgery. He is a regular speaker and regular organiser of courses on the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic pathologies in the UK and Europe.
Since 2015 he has been an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Lisbon.
where he is a surgeon in that institution’s Equine Surgery and Emergency Department.
Doctor Susana Monteiro
Susana Monteiro graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Technical University of Lisbon in 2004. She did two internships, one in France and the other in Canada, before joining the large animal surgery residency programme at the École Nationale Vétérinaire de Lyon in 2006. She obtained her diploma from the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2011, the year she started working in Portugal. She has been a lecturer in the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Évora since 2011 and received her PhD in Veterinary Sciences in 2016. She works in the Clinical Unit of the Alter Stud Farm, does research and has an interest in equine orthopaedics in general.
Doctor Joana Moreira da Silva
Joana Cabral Moreira da Silva completed her Masters in Microbiology in 2018 by Universidade de Lisboa Instituto Superior Técnico and Bachelor’s in Biochemistry in 2015 by Universidade de Lisboa Faculdade de Ciências. She is finishing her PhD studies at the Laboratory of Antibiotic Resistance under the guidance of Professora Constança Pomba at the CIISA (Centro de Investigação Interdisciplinar Sanidade Animal), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon. Her main area of interest is the development of infection, prevention and control guidelines in small animal veterinary practices, with a focus on mutltidrug-resistant bacteria. She is the lead-researcher of the on-going FCT project Vetcare, whose goal is to assess the landscape of multidrug-resistant bacteria in veterinary practices, ultimately designing appropriate infection, prevention and control guidelines.
She is one of the lecturers in the class ” Strategies for Antimicrobial Therapy in Veterinary Medicine”. She has published papers in international peer-reviewed journals. She has presented her work in national and international conferences. She is a member of ESGVM (European Study Group for Veterinary Microbiology) and ESGPHM (European Study Group for Public Health Microbiology).
She is currently the Head of Microbiology Department at the Genevet Diagnostic Laboratory.
Doctor Ângela Martins
Ângela Martins, graduated in veterinary medicine since 1991 on the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lisbon, and with a PhD in the area of functional neuro-rehabilitation in 2023 from the same University. Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (Dipl. ECVSMR) since 2023.
Founder of Arrábida Veterinary Hospital and the first Animal Functional Rehabilitation Center (CRAA) in Portugal. Clinical Director of Lisbon Animal Rehabilitation and Regeneration Center (CR2AL).
Professor on Lusófona University in the disciplines of Animal Rehabilitation and Emergency and Intensive Care, and coordinator of the degree in Veterinary Nursing at IPLUSO. Certified and instructor of the Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP) from the University of Tennessee.
Attended several international congresses on rehabilitation, in veterinary medicine as in human medicine. Speaker at various events in Portugal and internationally on the topic of animal neurorehabilitation. She has published several articles in quartile 1 journals, as well as a participant in books chapters, author of several posters on the same theme and other scientific works, in the area of functional rehabilitation.
Veterinary Nurse Alexandre Borralho
Graduated in Veterinary Nursing in 2011 from the Escola Superior Agrária de Elvas.
Veterinary nurse at Clínica Mundo Vet in Figueira da Foz between 2011 and 2015. Between 2012 and 2013 he completed a postgraduate course in physiotherapy and rehabilitation at Improve Iberica (now Improve International).

Doctor Thierry Correia
Graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 1999 from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. Post-graduate qualification in veterinary ophthalmology, Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, 2000. In 2003, he founded his first pet clinic in Tomar, which expanded to the city of Leiria in 2008. Doctor Teresa Matilla Pinto
Maria finished the Degree in Veterinary Science at the University of Extremadura in 2015. After that she completed a Rotating Internship Programme at Rof Codina University Hospital (University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain). She has worked as first opinion Veterinary Surgeon in different practices in Spain and England. She joined the Emergency and Critical Care Service and Anaesthesia Department in a Referral Center in 2021 in Barcelona (Ars Veterinaria). She is currently working at Veterios Referral Hospital in Madrid, Spain.
Doctor Raquel Mejias
Raquel es licenciada en Veterinaria por la Universidad de Extremadura en el año 2011. Nada más finalizar sus estudios formativos, comenzó un máster en medicina interna en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). En el año 2012 funda la clínica veterinaria Animax en Badajoz capital donde desarrolla su profesión como veterinaria generalista. En año 2015 decide formarse de forma más completa en el campo de la oftalmología veterinaria realizando una diplomatura en la UCM. En 2022, funda un servicio de oftalmología ambulante con cobertura por toda la Comunidad autónoma de Extremadura y lugares cercanos de Portugal, dedicándose a tiempo completo a este campo.
Veterinary Nurse Filipa Vandame
Filipa graduated in Veterinary Nursing from the Escola Superior Agrária de Elvas since 2017. After a few practices in small animal clinics during her studies, she did her final externship in reproduction and neonatal care in a Portuguese Thoroughbred stud in the South of France (Haras de la Gesse). Once graduated she went to a English Thoroughbred stud (Haras des Monceaux) in the north of France, in Normandy. After one long breeding season she started working in a veterinary clinic, in the same region, in the Equine sector. She is currently, since 2020, working in a Equine veterinary clinic in Paris (Clinique Vétérinaire de Grosbois) where she works mainly in radiology but also in surgery, clinical analyses laboratory and also the stocks and clinical material management. She finished a training in team management to better welcome and train the new nurses and interns arriving to the team.
Doctor Maria Madalena Centeno
Graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 2010 from the University of Lisbon. For the next three years worked as a veterinary clinician and as an investigator in antimicrobial resistance. In 2014 became an MBA-graduate from the IE Business School in Madrid. Between 2015 and 2022 worked in Regulatory Affairs in the healthcare sector. Since October 2022 she has been part of the Hill’s Pet Nutrition Iberian team as Associate Marketing manager and Professional Veterinary Affairs.
Doctor Leonor Valente
Graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 2009 from the University of Lisbon. PhD in animal behaviour and welfare from the University of Nottingham in England in 2018. In recent years she has worked in digital marketing in the pharmaceutical industry on projects in the area of animal behaviour. Since January 2023, she has been part of the Training and Scientific Communication Department at Royal Canin (Ibéria), S.A.
Doctor Tomás Trucco
Veterinarian graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of Esperanza at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral (FCV UNL) (2008), and holds a Master’s degree in Veterinary Sciences from the same institution, specialising in Applied Reproduction in cattle. He completed an internship in production animal veterinary medicine at the Hospital School of the Veterinary College, University of Ohio, in Columbus, USA (2009 – 2010). He was responsible for teaching final year veterinary students in the Department of Cattle Pathologies at FCV UNL (2014-2018). Tomas Trucco has extensive experience in caring for dairy and beef cattle. He is actively involved in research in the field of animal production. He has published more than 10 articles on anaesthetic and surgical techniques in cattle.
Veterinary Nurse Pedro Abreu
Pedro started his career as a professional rider graduated from the Escola de Desenvolvimento Rural de Alter do Chao in 2011. Later he graduated as a Veterinary Technician from the Escola Superior Agrária de Santarem before graduating as a Veterinary Nurse from Escola Superior Agrária de Elvas in 2016.
He started his first veterinary practices during his studies, with externships in several equine veterinary clinics (Equi+ Equine Services, Hospital de Equinos de Santo Estevão). He did a workshop in Equine First Aid in 2014.
His vet nurse final degree externship was in France, in a Portuguese Thoroughbred stud (Haras de la Gesse) where he stayed and worked for four years in the Reproduction clinic, handling stallions, working at the lab for semen freezing, gynecologist follow up and foal weaning and handling.
He currently works in Paris, in an Equine Veterinary Clinic (Clinique Vétérinaire de Grosbois) where he manages the surgical room (horse, material and people), helps in radiology when needed and in equine care.
Veterinary Nurse Daniela Pancrácio
Graduated in Veterinary Nursing from the Escola Superior Agrária de Viseu in 2019. She completed her final internship at a small animal hospital in Norway, where she developed her interest in the areas of Anaesthesia and Surgery.
She completed the postgraduate course in Anaesthesia NCert (Anaesth) for veterinary nurses at ISVPS in 2021.
She currently works as a nurse in charge of surgery at the school hospital of the Lusófona University of Humanity and Technologies (ULHT) in Lisbon. She has also been an assistant lecturer on the Veterinary Nursing course at the Polytechnic Institute of Lusophony (IPLUSO) since 2021, in the subjects of Anaesthesia and Surgical Techniques.
Doctor Miguel Ángel Sánchez Hurtado
Miguel Ángel Sánchez Hurtado holds a PhD in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Extremadura, with clinical experience in minimally invasive surgery since 2013. Co-founder of VETMI, a mobile minimally invasive of minimally invasive veterinary surgery (Cáceres) and of the ENDOTRAINING group, dedicated to the organisation of training courses in minimally invasive surgery in various specialities of human and veterinary medicine. Since 2005 he has experience in laparoscopic simulation and experimental surgery. He worked as a researcher at the CCMIJU in Cáceres. Member of the Iberian Association of Minimally Invasive Veterinary Surgery (MINIMAL) and of the AVEPA Endoscopy and Endoscopy AVEPA and Minimally Invasive (GEAMI).
